Parts to this gin and tonic with grapefruit
Grapefruit Juice and Grapefruit Bitters
In this cocktail, I've added some fresh grapefruit juice. I like the way the sour notes of grapefruit contrast the sweetness of the St Germain.
If you've been following me for a while, then it is no secret that I love grapefruit. It can be found in many of my recipes like my caramelized grapefruit or my grapefruit popsicles.
Tonic
There is a little fizz from the tonic (which does have it's own flavor). The tonic is a classic combination with gin and it does not overpower any of the other flavors.
Grapefruit Bitters
This grapefruit gin and tonic has some grapefruit bitters added to really enhance the grapefruit notes. If you do not have grapefruit bitters you can omit that from the recipe and it will still be amazing.
If you are not used to working with grapefruit bitters, it is made from various aromatics including grapefruit and herbs. It is sold in little bottles the size of a small condiment bottle.
There are actually different varieties of bitters on the market (some made from citrus) but most people are used to the traditional Angostura bitters made from plants and spices.
Grapefruit bitters is used in many citrus cocktails (it adds that little something extra to a drink) and it can be helpful in getting rid of upset stomachs.
I've known many bartenders who will bitters to you when you don't feel good. So, if you buy some bitters for your bar area, now you know another use for it that is not for making cocktails!
Elderflower liquor
This is the St Germain and it is so delicious and sweet. This is the sweetener in this grapefruit cocktail so no additional sweetener is needed.
The elderflower flavor also really compliments the grrapefruit and gin making it the perfect addition to this cocktail.
That is all of it! This drink is really easy to make and this recipe is your helpful guide on how to put it together.
It is really hard to screw this one up since all of the ingredients are fantastic no matter what proportions you use.
Additions and Variations
You can add even more herbal flavor to this grapefruit gin and tonic by adding in some homemade lavender water, lavender simple syrup or basil simple syrup. To do this, just half the amount of Elderflower liquor and replace with one of these floral/herb additions.
Common Questions
You can add a sweet liquor like we did here with the addition of St Germain or add a little fruit juice or simple syrup.
Absolutely. We add grapefruit juice for more flavor but you can also add other flavored juices or flavored simple syrups.
