Why this strawberry tops recipe works

Flavored simple syrups are one of the easiest things to make and can really make your drinks and food taste amazing with only a little effort.

With this easy recipe, making strawberry top syrup makes sure we are not leaving behind any food waste which is always one of my goals in the kitchen. While it is recommended to hull the strawberries by merely cutting out the center, most people just slice the tops leaving behind a good bit of strawberry and its flavor.

Whether you are making a strawberry galette, a strawberry mocktail, or strawberry popsicles, there are always the tops that get left behind for most people.

When you make this strawberry top syrup, it will last in the refrigerator for weeks and it is always nice to have something ready when you want to make a drink.

Ingredients needed

  • Strawberry tops: With the green leafy part removed.
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Water

Three simple ingredients are all you need to make this. With just ten minutes of your time, you can turn your strawberry tops (which would have ended up in the trash) into a delicious strawberry syrup.

How to make

The steps to making this strawberry simple syrup are really easy. You just add all of your ingredients into a saucepan, bring to a boil, and let simmer for 10 minutes.

Once it is done simmering, you just leave the berries in the simple syrup and then let it cool. Once it is cooled, you just strain it, and done!

How much strawberry flavor is in this syrup?

Because you are using just the tops of the strawberries, the strawberry flavor will not be as concentrated as if you were using the whole strawberries.

This syrup will have a lighter strawberry flavor. You can increase the intensity of the strawberry flavor by adding more strawberry tops to the recipe. It tastes amazing both ways.

Storing

I have found that this simple syrup stores really well in the fridge for about one week if it is covered. I have not had success storing it longer than this because the fruit that is infused in the syrup can go bad.

So aim for about one week in the fridge!

Some great uses for this simple syrup

  • To use in cocktails.
  • As a sweetener and flavor addition to non-alcoholic beverages like lemonade or limeade.
  • On top of pancakes, French toast, or even crepes.
  • You can add it to marinades for meat as a sweet element. This tastes really delicious.

You can totally use your own imagination and creativity for how to use flavored simple syrups. The small amount of work that it takes to make this simple syrup is well worth it for the huge reward in taste and uses in so many recipes.
