Jump to Recipe

You only need a few ingredients and just a little bit of time to make this blackberry syrup. Use it in cocktails, desserts, drinks, or anything else that needs the sweetness of fresh blackberries.

Blackberries are a favorite in our house. It is our daughter's favorite fruit so we grow lots of them in our Texas garden. I don't mind the work of growing them because there are so many uses for blackberries and they freeze really well.

One of my favorite uses for this summer fruit is combining blackberries, sugar, water, and a little fresh lemon to make the most amazing blackberry syrup. We make lots of this stuff because it is so delicious and the sweet and tangy flavor of blackberries makes this syrup perfect for adding to cocktails, lemonade, iced teas, and even to top pancakes or ice cream.

It is so easy to make and if you have 10 minutes to spare, you can make this too.

Ingredients

A pot with blackberries in it.
  • Fresh blackberries (or you can use frozen)
  • Granulated sugar.
  • Water.
  • Lemon. Lemon added at the end really brightens the flavor of the blackberries so beautifully.

How to make

This simple syrup is so easy to make. Only a few simple steps before you are on your way to having a delicious syrup that has endless uses.

A pan with berries in it on a stove top.
  1. Add blackberries, sugar, and water to a small saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and gently simmer until the blackberries are soft about 2-4 minutes.
  3. Now mash the blackberries down in the simple syrup then remove from the heat and allow to cool.

  1. Add the fresh lemon to the syrup.
  2. Once cool, strain out the blackberries with a fine mesh sieve.

Once cool you can store this blackberry syrup in the fridge for up to one week in a covered container.

Variations

We love this blackberry syrup just as it is but you can add some additional flavors to make it even more special. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Fresh mint leaves can be added while the blackberries are simmering add a fresh mint note to the syrup.
  • Add fresh basil to the blackberries while simmering for a sweet basil note.
  • You can add other berries and make a mixed berry simple syrup.

Storing

To store this blackberry syrup, just place it in a container with a lid (once it is cooled) in the refrigerator. The syrup will last for up to one week.
