Cucumber and Citrus Aqua Fresca Recipe

Agua frescas are a classic Spanish drink made from fruit, water and sugar. These cucumber and citrus agua frescas are a classic flavor combination but any fruit can be used in place of the cucumbers. The agua fresca is all about the water to fruit and sugar ratio.

In Spanish, agua fresca means fresh water and it is not meant to be an overly sweet drink. Agua Frescas are meant to be refreshing and light. That is exactly what this drink is!

I chose to make cucumber agua frescas because I have an abundance of cucumbers growing in my garden and I need a way to use up as many as possible as quickly as possible. If you want to make this version of an agua fresca, you can buy the inexpensive cucumbers that have seeds; you don' t need the more expensive seedless cucumbers.

As I mentioned above, this agua fresca recipe is made with the standard agua fresca ingredients.

Here are the ingredients you will need for this agua fresca recipe:

    • Water
    • Sugar
    • Citrus (I used a combination of limes and lemons)
    • Fruit (I used cucumbers for this recipe)

The nice part about making this recipe is everything gets thrown into a blender and the blender does all the work for you. It is also really healthy because you are getting the fiber from the fruit along with its juices.

One of the things that I love to do with agua frescas is to turn them into cocktails. I will make a large batch of this and use half as non alcoholic drinks and the other half for cocktails. There is something for everyone.

    agua fresca

If you have never had this drink before, it will not be thick because you are blending it in a high speed blender but if you do make it ahead of time (like I like to do) then you will need to give it a little stir before serving it. Some of the pulp from the fruit will settle at the bottom of your pitcher.

Here is what the steps look like to make this easy agua fresca recipe:

    cucumbers for agua fresca
    Peel and chop your cucumbers
    citrus
    Juice your fruit
    agua fresca in blender
Add it to a high speed blender
    agua fresca
    Blend until smooth.

I told you this was an easy recipe. When you mix the agua fresca you will notice a foam on top. I do not mind this but you can skim this off before serving if this is not your thing.

The cucumber agua fresca is a classic one to make but there so many other flavors you can make as well.

Here are some of the classic Agua Frescas flavors to make:

    • Strawberry Agua Fresca
    • Watermelon Agua Fresca
    • Cantaloupe Agua Fresca
    • Pineapple Agua Fresca
    • Mango Agua Fresca

To make any of these other flavors, just swap out the fruit. The citrus part and all of the other ingredients can remain the same.

This was really refreshing. We strained the pulp part out of the drink since we used it in a cocktail with some gin and it came out amazing
